Performer Biographies
Asian Story Theater
Asian Story Theater began in 1989, dramatizing Chinese folk tales as a project sponsored by the San Diego Chinese Center. The first production was The White Snake (1989-90), presented at the Lyceum Space Theatre and subsequently toured to county schools, libraries, and recreation centers. In 1991 the company staged it's first adaptation based on the 16th century fantasy novelJourney to the West, featuring the Monkey King. Additional productions followed each year. In 1995 the company incorporated as the Asian Story Theater, independent of the San Diego Chinese Center, to diversify programming and expand touring operations to San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Don Kearns
Don Kearns is an amateur musician playing Chinese guzheng long zither and xiao bamboo flute. The beauty of these instruments and the music written for them, is truly extraordinary, and is a great inspiration. In addition to study, Don has performed publicly for several years, both as a soloist and currently with the Bo Hua ensemble. Don also plays the xiao in duet with the guqin zither, in the ancient art form called qin-xiao, and is a member of the Xi Fan Qin She guqin club in San Diego.
Fay McGrew & Students
Qigong is a modern mind body science based on ancient Chinese health practice of deep relaxation techniques, mindfulness breathing exercises, and fluid movements clinically proven to reduce stress, strengthen the body’s natural healing abilities, and enhance overall health, well-being, and inner peace. Fay has over 40 years’ experience studying various ancient mind body meditation practices with Masters in China. Since 1996, she has introduced Qigong to thousands of San Diegans. Hsi Feng Temple
Hsi Fang Temple is a Chinese Ch'an and Pure Land Buddhist temple. The temple was founded by the Venerable Master Hsing Yun in 1989. It is associated with the Fo Guang Shan order and temple in Taiwan as well as Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, California.
Jiang String Ensemble
The Jiang String Ensemble is a San Diego-based traditional Chinese music performance group led by instructor Rachel Jiang. They have performed at a variety of venues, including schools, restaurants, theaters, and cultural fairs. Dressed in beautiful Chinese costume, they aim to bring the joy of traditional Chinese music to San Diego!
JING Institute of Chinese Martial Arts & Culture
The JING Institute of Chinese Martial Arts & Culture Performance Team delights in sharing the joys of Wushu and Taiji with Southern California! Enjoy the high energy and crisp power of Chinese Kungfu, a la Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon! Then relax with the calm, fliud movements of Taiji (Tai Chi). Minghuan Ren
Minghuan Ren is an Erhu performer and experienced instructor, as well as a music writer, composer and performer. He is a Director for the San Diego Chinese Music Ensemble and has performed for Special Events in San Diego. He plays and teaches traditional Chinese Music and Erhu Instruction Lessons. Naruwan Taiko Drummers
In January 2008, with the support of the Taiwanese American Community Center, collegiate taiko alum Diana Wu organized an open workshop for the local San Diego community as a means to introduce and teach the basics of taiko, a form of Japanese drumming also growing in popularity in North America. Following soon after, committed and enthusiastic individuals came together to begin the first Taiwanese American sponsored taiko drumming group in Southern California, Naruwan Taiko. The name of “Naruwan Taiko” stems from the same word “naruw’an” from the indigenous Taiwanese Ami language meaning “Welcome [for] we are all in the same family.” Similarly, to live up to its name, Naruwan Taiko’s mission as a performance group is to welcome people of all ages and all levels to join and to learn the style of Japanese drumming.
Lucky Lion Dancers
The San Diego Lucky Lion Dance group is the oldest and the largest in the greater-San Diego area with performances contracted throughout the year. Our busiest schedule occurs during Chinese New Year. The lion dance is an important tradition in the Chinese culture. The dance is common practice as part of Chinese New Year festivities, bringing good luck and happiness. Often times, you will also see this tradition performed at weddings and grand-openings of restaurants.
San Diego Korean Pungmul School
San Diego Korean Pungmul School supports and preserves the identities of our future generations by teaching about the glorious spirit of our Korean ancestors and experience a variety of traditional Korean musical culture. We pass this culture down to our youth by teaching Pungmul (musical play), Minyo (folk song), and Talchum (mask dance). The team started in January 2007 and it is composed of several families. We play a variety of Korean traditional instruments, such as Kwangari, Jing, Janggu, Buk, Sogo, and Taephyungso. We tie some of the instruments to our body and play while we are dancing. There are various types of Korean traditional music we would like to share with other communities. All our members strive to exhibit a high quality performance in the future. ShaSha Luo
ShaSha Luo came from Cheng Du City, in the Sichuan province. She was part of the Cheng Du City Acrobatic Troupe. She now performs in various cultural events in the bigger Los Angeles area. One of the acts involves balancing various objects including three raw eggs on top of each other. Only a handful of people in the world can perform such a skill.

Our mission statement is: Enriching the lives of youths by reconnecting them to art, music and cultural programs that inspire and uplift their spirits, self-esteem and self-worth.Founded in June 2010 by Sifu Du, Three Treasures is a non-profit 501c3 that has had a lot of fun integrating itself into the community. Big corporations such as Union Bank, Scripps Cancer Center and Comicon are some of the few big names that have invited us to be a part of their events. On the local level, we're proud of our friendships with the San Diego Chinese Center, House of China, Barnard Elementary Mandarin School and Silk Road Productions who put on great cultural events such as the Asian Cultural Festival, Asian Music Festival and Linda Vista Fair. UCSD Chinese Dance Association
UCSD Chinese Dance Association was founded early 2009 by 4 undergraduate students with a passion for Chinese dance and has since grown, performing for audiences throughout San Diego County. CDA forms a bridge which fuses the traditional dances of the East with modern forms of the West, a style uniquely developed as a reflection of Asian dance through the ages. Our purpose is to create an atmosphere of artistic and creative expression for dancers and viewers alike, hoping to enrich the community with the awareness of Asian culture through the art of dance.
UCSD YUE Chinese Music Ensemble
YUE - Chinese Music Ensemble at the University of California, San Diego is a non-profit student organization. YUE seeks to spread awareness of Chinese music and to a greater extent, Chinese culture, to the UCSD campus and the greater San Diego community. YUE will provide a community for any UCSD student interested in the study and performance of Chinese traditional music and its associated instruments.
White Dragon Martial Arts
Established in 1985, White Dragon Martial Arts is one of the oldest and largest martial arts organizations in San Diego County, California. White Dragon specializes in traditional kung fu, and tai chi, as well as mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and self-defense training. White Dragon is dedicated to improving the lives of its students through the practice of martial arts. Students learn not only one of the most effective systems of self-defense, but also one of the most complete forms of health improvement. The values of positive attitude, discipline, and respect gained from the training help students become well-rounded, responsible and successful individuals.
